I liked the harbour area for strolling and eating with the market areas for shopping. Knossos was a wonderful experience as was the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Give yourself two to fours hours to really see Knossos, depending on the crowds and three to four hours to see everything in the museum.

The town/city has many new buildings after WW2.
The town/city has many new buildings after WW2. There is an extensive shopping area with many restaurants and bars, the older buildings are either being replaced or renovated, but the outlying suburbs need development and some proper Town & Country planning application. The boundaries between domestic, retail, industry & commerce need greater definition.
Great potential for tourism, with areas of domestic and tourist housing showing signs of its artistic residents "flare".

This is good for a weekend trip, but if you are staying longer hire a car and tour, landing here and returning via Chana. We took out the extra insurance via Booking.com, very wise because the vehicle was hit by a driver while parked, who drove off. Due to the state of the roads and the increased traffic this is common, there was another couple in the hire office that had also been hit while parked. Standards of driving in Greece are poor. Booking.com paid out within 24 hours of the claim. This was a return visit to Crete after 20 years. The nation is in steep decline with appalling infrastructure and an unhappy population. We will not return.

Heraklion is now the main city of Crete, where years ago it was Chania. Over recent years the central area has been upgraded with paved walking to the shops and square. If you look upwards you can still see the signs of previous Venetian times and around old constructions. There is a street market area now selling the usual tourist pieces, which has changed from a market that had fruit, vegetables, fish etc. The side streets still have the small restaurants of old. As you walk down towards the harbour area you should visit Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa as their food is superb traditional Cretan and used by locals. The harbour area is good to walk along and watch the cruise ships and ferries. Ferries leave from Heraklion daily to local islands such as Santorini and provide an excellent service. The modernised bus station just 15 minutes from centre will allow you to move to all areas of Crete on clean efficient buses. Heraklion can get very busy during the weekend or bank holiday times, when locals visit and sit around the square in the cafes and small bars, providing a great atmosphere.

Heraklio is a great place to visit!.
Heraklio is a great place to visit!. We stayed for over a month and were never bored. There is a very extensive pedestrian area with a huge variety of shops, places of cultural interest, restaurants and snack bars. The local cuisine is reasonably priced. The city is very busy with locals and tourists mixing in the pedestrian areas.
Heraklio is a great base for visiting the rest of the island as most of the major urban areas are also on the north coast. There are very efficient local and regional bus services and of course car and moped hire.
For those interested in history and culture Heraklio is the place to visit. I do recommend reading up on the incredible history of the island before visiting as this will help the visitor better understand the context of what they are visiting.
We visited in March to April and combined a city holiday with a beach holiday. There are two very long beaches very near the city centre.
Almost everyone we met spoke very good English so we never really got to use any of the little Greek we learned before travelling. In one month we never used any cash as all business take electronic payment per mobile phone, credit cards etc.
An absolute gem at Heraklion centre. I have visited almost every hotel at Heraklion for business purposes mostly but this is the first time i get so excited! Everything here is designed for the guests shake, with style and comfort. I loved the bed and the pillows the wallpapers too...great job on the breakfast box too that i added upon arrival ( quite enormous for me but i took it with me when leaving hotel). + Booked me a dinner table at a great fish restaurant near hotel with discount!
The hotel room was impeccable. The complimentary water, wine , macroons, chocolates etc was a lovely and delicious surprise. The hotel staff was awesome, and breakfast was delicious. Lots of variety.
It was about 20 minutes' walk to the city center but we didn't mind the walk. Plus, the hop on hop off buses stop at the hotel. We had the executive room. Do yourself a favor and stay at this hotel. We will definitely stay here when next we visit Crete.
The room was very clean and very efficiently organised. Staff were very kind and greatly helped my activities in Heraklion.
The location is very close to the sea. I love walking along the sea, so it was great for me. I saw beautiful sunset everyday just near the hotel.
The area is rather quiet, compared to the centre of the town, yet it is very easy to access most of the sightseeing places. I liked this quiet environment very much.
The hotel is a fantastic palace with the best location in front of the Venetian Port.
The room is very nice, fantastic views and amazing bathrooms, everything is perfect.
Breakfast was the best we found in the entire island. They have a fantastic sweet area cakes and typical pastries from Crete, that are delicious. Trully a 5 star hotel breakfast.
The personal is very gentle too and helpfull.
The location of the hotel is a perfect starting point for walking around the city centre and exploring Iraklion's main landmarks.
We particularly enjoyed the direct view on the quiet, fascinating old square and the breakfast served in a very relaxing atmosphere at the nearby cafe.
The room is very modern, spacious, clean and comfortable, with soft beds and excellent bathroom.
I liked the fact that the hotel is so close to the airport; we prefer to take the afternoon flight from the UK which arrives at 22:45 and we then need to stay somewhere close before going the next day to our house near Rethymno. The man on reception is always friendly and welcoming; the hotel is comfortable and clean and is a great way to start our trips to Crete.
Jet2 messed up my flight contacted hotel non refundable but no charge for new date-super young lady on recep. late shift was so nice to deal with - Item I wanted at breakfast cold so they cooked another. Tea coffee available downstairs at breakfast room.
Would use hotel again if flying in or out of Crete
Everything was excellent! House was exactly as we expected, clean and warm without any problems. Especially our hosts welcomed us with so much love and informed us perfectly about what places to visit or where to go! Definitely gonna choose this again if we go to Crete for holidays! Ευχαριστούμε για όλα!
I dont know what everyone expect from hotel near airport, but it is what u pay for. We needed to get sleep before the flight, so we did. yes its noisy, when the plane flies absolutely near your balcony :D but you get free airconditioner, clean room, comfy bed, and thats enough for one night to get rest
Modern hotel with fridge and kettle in the room. Room was spacious. Good variety and options for breakfast. Excellent location for exploring the city on foot. City centre, with restaurants, shops & sights, was a short walk away. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
It was a last minute reservation in Crete. The lady “sorry I forgot her name” waited until we arrived late night and made sure we got everything we need.
It’s amazing when the hosts show care to their residents.
The rooms are spacious. The style was also special
Truly very impressed with this ‘airport’ hotel. All amenities were available and it offered a really nice stay for our last night in Crete. Airport is <5min by car and the hotel offers safe onsite parking, nice breakfast, and even a Raki welcome drink. Stay here!
A small boutique hotel in the city center of Heraklion, Crete with plenty of amenities.
Very clean, every detail has been taken care of in the room.
Polite staff of the hotel serve the whole 24 hours.
Congratulations, I highly recommend it
The personnel was very nice and helpful, answered all our questions, and let us leave the luggage
Well located, super close to the centre
The hotel has a deal with one of the parking lots nearby and you can park your car there for 8 e/ day
The property lived up to its name and reputation as the #1 hotel in Crete. Room, amenities, services and staff all exceptional. Location was very convenient.
